Watson was a bumbler not a bungler, and the character is one the Nigel Bruce made his own. Clearly the character is the perfect and not quite joined in, foyle to Holmes perceived perfection. We deal in paradigms here, that is the charm of the stories.

Wickipedia says Nigel Bruce was shot in the left leg 11 times in WW1. Eleven times! I'm looking at my left leg and I don't think I would have enough room for Eleven bullets. I wouldn't place too much faith in Wicki, but another source repeated it, While the rest of the bios just stated he received a very serious leg wound. Eleven times? He must have had it sticking out of the trench.
