Post reformation while Britain converted to Protestantism, Ireland rigidly stuck to Catholicism. This left England in a tricky situation as its main enemies were Spain and France both of which were Catholic. England feared Ireland could be used as a base to attack Britain by Spain and France in the early 17th C, so Elizabeth 1st and the subsequent monarchs began a process of "planting settlers" who were both Protestant and British hoping that this would make Ireland loyal and Protestant.
The English came to Ireland to conquer it in 1169, as the Pope at that time was an English man and he wanted control over the Irish church as the Irish church wasn't under the Vatican's authority. The 1169 Norman invasion did conquer Ireland but the Normans began to mix with the Irish until they were "more Irish than the Irish themselves", subsequently in Ireland they became known as the Old English, as they stayed Catholic and fought alongside the native Irish after English became Protestant.
